Project Word and its director have been grateful to receive support from The Christensen Fund, the Fund for Investigative Journalism, the Joshua Mailman Foundation, the Mesa Refuge, The Nation Institute, and the McCormick Foundation, via the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting; as well as from generous individual donors to Project Word.
In 2016, Project Word launched the pilot of Freelance Investigative Reporters and Editors program, (FIRE), with $200,000 in seed money from an anonymous former legacy news reporter. Since then FIRE has operated with contributions from individual donors and modest support from the Ford Foundation.
