Writers' Guidelines

The Partnership Model

Project Word invests in relationships with writers. Each year, we work with a select few writers, engaging closely with each and tailoring our work to the needs of the writer and their story proposal. Our services include necessary developmental editing, coaching, training, or entrée to editors to ensure the success of a piece. When considering writers who apply to our program, we keep three criteria in mind:

The Right Match
Project Word is interested in articles touching on racial and economic justice, human rights, community health, environmental justice, indigenous sovereignty, and biocultural preservation. Articles and proposals must indicate a deep grasp of the subject, demonstrate a compelling story or narrative thread, and shed light on an important topic.

Writers’ Qualifications
We are looking for writers who are hungry to improve and are devoted to the work necessary to expand their publishing horizons. This often includes newspaper reporters who have demonstrated facility with deeper, longer pieces and want to pursue such opportunities.

The Project Word Application
We accept proposals year round, although some special projects have proposal deadlines. If you are interested and meet our writers' qualifications, we invite you to fill out a Project Word application.
