Writers' Qualifications

Journalism and Beyond

Project Word usually works with journalists or writers—staffers and freelancers alike—who have written for at least three newspaper or magazine editors and who have demonstrated basic reporting, storytelling, and writing skills, including the ability to identify the most important elements of a story, set scenes, portray sources and characters, and keep a narrative moving.

We generally require the following minimum qualifications:

  • 3–5 years' experience writing for 75k-circulation newspapers or major magazines, or basic reporting and writing experience
  • Experience in long-form feature writing or narrative journalism
  • Experience in reporting on communities of color
  • Background working with ecology and biocultural relationships
